Gifts for book lovers: ideas for every kind of reader

Editorial still life with a gift, mug, and thoughtfully chosen objects

Giving a book to a keen reader is risky: they have either read it or it will join a pile that has been waiting for months. The best gift for someone who reads a lot is often not a book, but something that makes reading more comfortable, more frequent, or more shared.

First, figure out what kind of reader they are

For the paper reader

A clip-on or neck reading light, to read without disturbing anyone; a reading stand or pillow; quality bookmarks in leather, metal, or wood, perhaps with an engraved initial; design bookends; a fabric book sleeve for bags; or a reading journal for titles, quotes, and ratings.

For the digital reader

If they already read on a phone, an e-reader is one of the most appreciated gifts: an easy-on-the-eyes screen, weeks of battery, and hundreds of books in a few grams. If they already own one, think about a case, a stand, or a warm light. For people who read many titles, a subscription such as Kindle Unlimited gives access to a large e-book catalog. Check that their favorite genres are well represented first.

For the listener

An Audible membership suits people with little time to sit and read but plenty of time on the move: commuters, athletes, parents. Pair it with comfortable headphones or a small kitchen speaker for a complete gift.

For someone who already has too many books

Choose gifts that do not add to the pile: a rotating bookcase or shelf to organize what they have; an experience such as an author event, a literary festival, or a visit to a historic library; a gift card for an independent bookstore; or a reading-time kit with tea, a soft blanket, and a candle. The gift is the free hour, not the object.

If you still want to give a book

Look for a public wish list or ask someone close to them. Choose a special edition of a book they already loved: illustrated, bound, or in the original language. Try a lesser-known author in their favorite genre instead of the current bestseller. Write a dedication explaining why you chose it, and include a gift receipt without embarrassment.

What to avoid

Avoid purely decorative "literary" gadgets if you do not know their taste well, and books chosen for the message you want to send. A gift for a reader should respect their taste, not correct it.
