Gifts for dog and cat lovers: ideas for owners and pets

Editorial still life with a gift, mug, and thoughtfully chosen objects

For someone who lives with a dog or a cat, the animal is family, and a gift that recognizes it goes straight to the heart. But a gift for the pet must be safe first, and a gift for the owner should not become just a themed object.

Three possible routes

A gift for the person, inspired by their pet, is the most personal. A gift for the pet is the most fun to open and to watch. A gift that makes life easier for both is the most useful.

For the person: a portrait of their pet

The most touching gift is almost always personalized with their animal: an illustrated portrait from a photo, a mug or blanket with its picture, a pendant with its name or paw print. Get a well-lit photo taken at the animal's eye level, and order early: personalized products take longer, especially in December.

For dog owners

A walking pouch for bags, treats, and keys; a travel water bottle with a built-in bowl; a safety light for the collar on dark winter walks; a dog towel or drying robe for rainy days; or a washable cover for the sofa or car seat.

For cat owners

A design scratching post that does not spoil the decor; a water fountain, since many cats drink more from running water; a heated or radiator bed for winter; and interactive toys for indoor cats.

For the pet: play and comfort

Mental-enrichment toys such as snuffle mats and treat puzzles keep animals busy and stimulated. Always match the size to the animal: a toy that is too small for a big dog can be swallowed.

Safety first

No human food, chocolate above all, which is toxic to dogs and cats; tinsel and string decorations are also dangerous for cats. Ask the owner before giving treats, as many pets follow specific diets. Choose sturdy toys without small detachable parts. If you give a plant to a cat owner, check it is not toxic: poinsettias and lilies are among those to avoid.

What to avoid

Never give an animal as a surprise: it is a responsibility of many years that must be chosen, not received. Also avoid pet clothing unless you know the animal tolerates it.
