Gifts for babies and children: age and safety first

Editorial still life with a gift, mug, and thoughtfully chosen objects

Choose for the child’s actual age, development, and family situation. Ask a parent what is needed and what is already there. The 3Gifts questionnaire itself currently covers gift recipients age 13 and up; this is an editorial guide for adult gift-givers.

For babies

Practical items requested by parents, age-appropriate board books, clothing in an agreed size, or a keepsake may be useful. A decorative keepsake is not a toy and should not be placed where a baby can reach it. Ask parents before choosing anything for sleep, feeding, care, or transport.

For toddlers and older children

Age-appropriate building toys, sturdy picture books, and simple puzzles can suit toddlers. For older children, start with existing interests such as drawing, reading, construction, or games. Check the manufacturer’s age label for each exact product; a broad category does not establish safety.

Safety comes before surprise

Read warnings and instructions. Consider small parts, batteries, magnets, cords, noise, and required supervision. Keep packaging and the receipt. Check official recalls and ask parents about relevant restrictions without entering children’s personal or health information into this site.

Check the destination market

For EU toys, review the European Commission’s toy-safety guidance and required labeling; CE marking is not a substitute for reading warnings. For US purchases, use the CPSC’s toy-safety and recall resources. A European listing is not proof of compliance for another market.

Think about the household

Who will assemble, clean, store, or supervise the gift? A large toy in a small home or a distant activity can create extra work. Parent approval is particularly important for equipment related to a child’s care.
