Gifts for teachers at Christmas and the end of the year
Every December the parents' group chat fills up with the same question: what do we get the teachers? A class gift works when it is simple to organize, fair to every family, and useful for the person receiving it.
Class gift or individual gift?
A class gift is almost always the better choice: one thoughtful present instead of twenty small objects, no family left out, and no comparisons between children. An individual gift makes sense only as a small personal gesture, such as a card or a drawing.
How to organize it without arguments
- One person coordinates, often the class representative, and proposes two or three options.
- A small, voluntary contribution: roughly €3–5 per family, with the option not to take part without explanation.
- The whole class signs, including those who did not contribute: the gift comes from the children.
- A clear deadline: decide by the end of November.
The most appreciated gift is not bought
Ask a teacher which gift they have kept for years and the answer is almost always the same: the children's work. A group card with a message from each pupil, an album of class drawings, a framed group photo. Add this to the bought gift and you have done the most important part.
Class gift ideas
A gift card for a bookstore or stationery shop; an experience voucher such as a massage, a dinner, or theater tickets; a quality plant or orchid; gourmet food such as regional products or an artisan panettone; a large, good-looking bag for marking; or something for the classroom, such as books for the class library.
Personal gestures under €10
A mug or bottle printed with the child's drawing, homemade cookies in a jar decorated together, a bookmark or notebook with a note written by the child, or a small succulent with a card.
What to avoid
"World's best teacher" items, which every teacher receives by the dozen; perfume, cosmetics, and clothing; expensive gifts, which can embarrass and create disparities between families (public-school staff in Italy are also subject to conduct rules that generally allow only gifts of modest value); and generic candles or soaps of poor quality.
End of the school year
The same rules apply in June, with one difference: if the teachers are leaving the class, the gift can be more keepsake than utility. An album with photos and messages from the years spent together is hard to beat.
